A good event or corporate photographer in Nairobi typically charges about KES 15,000 to 45,000 for a half day and KES 35,000 to 90,000 for a full day, before travel and extras. Hire on portfolio, turnaround time and a written usage agreement, and get written consent before using guests’ photos in marketing.
- Price follows hours on site, number of photographers, editing volume and how fast you need the pictures.
- Ask for two full galleries from real events, not a highlights reel of twenty best shots.
- Under the Data Protection Act 2019, using an identifiable person’s photo in marketing needs consent you can prove.
- Put image ownership and usage rights in the contract before the shoot, not after.

How much does a photographer cost in Nairobi?
Most corporate event coverage in Nairobi falls between KES 15,000 and KES 90,000 per photographer per day. Campaign and product shoots cost more because they add styling, lighting, models and retouching.
The table below shows typical ranges we see in 2026 for business work. They are general market ranges, not Red Giant Media’s rate card, and every serious supplier should give you a written quote that lists hours, deliverables and delivery dates.
| Type of shoot | Typical range (KES, 2026) | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Event coverage, half day (up to about 4 hours) | 15,000 to 45,000 | Experience, number of edited images, same-day selects |
| Corporate event, full day (about 8 hours) | 35,000 to 90,000 | Second photographer, overtime, travel outside Nairobi |
| Team headshots on site (half-day session) | 25,000 to 70,000 | Number of people, backdrop and lighting set-up, retouching level |
| Product or food shoot, studio day | 40,000 to 150,000 | Number of products, styling, props, background changes |
| Commercial campaign shoot (stills for ads) | 100,000 and up | Models, location fees, crew size, usage rights, retouching |
| Same-day edit for social media | Often 10,000 to 30,000 on top | An extra editor on site, number of images per hour |
Weddings are quoted separately and usually higher. If a quote looks far below these ranges, check what you are giving up: usually editing, backup equipment or the rights to use the pictures.
From experience: the cheapest quote and the most expensive one often differ mainly in delivery time. Ask “when will I have 30 usable photos for LinkedIn?” and compare that answer, not just the day rate.
Which kind of photographer do you need?
Match the photographer to the job: an excellent wedding photographer is not automatically good at a product flat-lay or a 400-person conference. Most businesses in Nairobi need one of five types.
Event and conference photographers
They work fast in poor light, know when the CEO is about to walk on stage and can cover a room without getting in the way. This is the right choice for launches, award ceremonies, AGMs, end-of-year parties and activations. On award nights and launches, such as the MCK Excellence award ceremony and the Safaricom Get Hook’d launch at Eldoret Sports Club that we worked on, the key moments last seconds. You need someone who anticipates them rather than reacts.
Corporate portrait and headshot photographers
For staff profiles, annual reports, personal branding and press kits. Look for consistent lighting across many people and a way to keep the queue moving. A good one will bring a portable backdrop and match the style to your existing photos.
Product, food and commercial photographers
Studio control, lighting, styling and retouching. Food photography for menus and delivery apps is its own skill, as is real estate and architecture work, which needs wide lenses, straight verticals and the right time of day.
Documentary and NGO photographers
For programmes, field visits and impact reports. The skill here is ethics as much as technique: consent, dignity and accurate captions, especially when children or vulnerable people are in the frame.
Photo booths and branded photo moments
A photo booth, 360 camera or branded backdrop at a mall activation or staff party gives guests something to share. It does not replace a photographer documenting the event for your own use.
How do you choose a good event photographer in Nairobi?
Judge full galleries from real events, confirm backup equipment and agree delivery times in writing. Instagram highlights show what a photographer can do on a good day; a complete gallery shows what you will actually receive.
| What to check | Good sign | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Portfolio | Two or three complete galleries from corporate events | Only a highlights reel or only weddings |
| Low-light work | Clean, sharp photos from evening and indoor events | Every sample shot outdoors in daylight |
| Backup | Two camera bodies, dual card slots, spare batteries | “I’ve never had a problem” |
| Turnaround | Selects within 24 to 48 hours, full gallery date in writing | “About two weeks, depending” |
| Rights | Written licence covering marketing and PR use | Rights not mentioned, or extra fees after the event |
| Payment | Deposit to book, balance on delivery, receipts issued | Full payment upfront via personal M-Pesa only |
| Conduct | Asks for a shot list and run-of-show | Arrives without knowing who the VIPs are |
Do you need consent to photograph people at events in Kenya?
Yes, if you will use identifiable photos of people in marketing. Kenya’s Data Protection Act 2019 treats a person’s image as personal data, and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has said consent must be express, specific and informed, and that the organisation must be able to prove it.
The ODPC applied this in a January 2025 decision: a company that used a former sales agent’s photo on marketing flyers without his explicit consent was ordered to pay him KES 500,000 in compensation. The company could not produce a signed consent, and that decided the case.
For events, a practical set-up looks like this:
- Tell people before they arrive. Put a photography notice on the invitation, registration page and signage at the entrance.
- Give an easy opt-out. A different coloured lanyard or sticker works well, and the photographer must be briefed on it.
- Get signed releases for featured faces. Anyone who will appear prominently in an advert, billboard or brochure should sign a release, including your own staff.
- Be stricter with children. Photos of minors need a parent or guardian’s consent. School and community events need extra care.
- Store the files responsibly. Agree where the photographer keeps the images and when they will delete copies.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. For a large campaign, ask your legal team or the ODPC’s published guidance.
Who owns the photos, and can you use them in ads?
Do not assume you own the photos because you paid for the shoot. Agree ownership or a usage licence in writing before the event, covering where you can use the images, for how long and whether third parties such as partners or media can use them.
Event photos are usually licensed for your own PR, social media and internal use. Using the same image in a paid advert, on packaging or on a billboard is a bigger use and photographers often price it separately. If a sponsor or partner wants the pictures, say so at the quoting stage. Also ask the photographer not to post your event on their own channels until you have released it, especially for launches under embargo.
Worth adding to the contract: number of edited images, file format and resolution, delivery date, how long the photographer keeps a backup, and whether raw files are included.
Do you need a permit for a shoot or drone photos in Kenya?
Still photography at a private venue usually needs only the venue’s permission. Drones, national parks, public spaces and filmed content have extra rules.
- Drones: the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) requires drones to be registered, and commercial operators need a Remote Aircraft Operator’s Certificate. Flights over crowds or near restricted areas need approval. Ask your supplier for their KCAA documents before you book aerial shots of an event.
- National parks and reserves: commercial shoots need permission from the park authority, and filming there involves the Kenya Film Commission as well.
- Malls and private estates: management permission is needed, and many malls charge for commercial shoots.
- Video: commercial filming falls under the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) licensing regime. Our guide to video production in Kenya covers how that works.
How to brief a photographer (what to send)
A one-page brief removes most of the problems we see on event days. Send it at least a week before the shoot.
| Send this | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Date, venue, call time and finish time | Sets hours and overtime |
| Run-of-show with key moments | Speeches, unveilings and awards are missed when nobody shares timings |
| Shot list and must-have people | CEO, chief guest, sponsors, award winners |
| Brand guidelines and sample images you like | Matches colour, mood and framing |
| How images will be used | Sets the licence and the price |
| Delivery needs | Same-day selects for social, full gallery date, file sizes |
| Consent arrangements | Opt-out lanyards, signed releases, children present or not |
| On-site contact and dress code | Someone to point out VIPs and approve access |
If the event is a launch, our guide to product launch events in Kenya shows where photography fits in the wider timeline. For awards nights, see our notes on award ceremony planning, and for the December rush, end-of-year party ideas.
What goes wrong at event shoots, and how do you prevent it?
Most failures come from missing information, not missing talent. The photographer did not know when the award was happening, or who the chief guest was.
- Missed key moment: share the run-of-show and send a message when timings change.
- Dark, grainy photos: stage lighting designed for video can be too dim for stills. Ask your AV team and photographer to talk before the day.
- Branding cut out: tell the photographer which backdrops and banners must be in shot.
- Late delivery: write the delivery date into the agreement and hold back part of the payment until it arrives.
- One photographer for two rooms: if you have breakouts or an expo floor running alongside the main hall, budget for a second shooter.

Quick answers
How much does an event photographer cost in Nairobi?
Typical 2026 ranges are about KES 15,000 to 45,000 for a half day and KES 35,000 to 90,000 for a full day with one photographer. A second photographer, same-day edits and travel outside Nairobi cost extra. Always get a written quote.
How long should it take to get event photos back?
A good corporate photographer can send a small set of edited selects within 24 to 48 hours and the full edited gallery within about a week. Agree the dates in writing before the event.
Do I need consent to post photos of event guests in Kenya?
For marketing use, yes. The Data Protection Act 2019 treats images as personal data, and the ODPC expects consent that is express, specific and provable. Use photography notices, an opt-out lanyard and signed releases for featured people.
Who owns the copyright in photos from my company event?
It depends on your agreement. Do not assume that paying for the shoot gives you ownership. Put ownership or a usage licence in writing, covering where and how long you can use the images.
Do I need a permit to use a drone for event photos in Kenya?
Yes. Drones must be registered with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and commercial operators need a KCAA operator certificate. Flying over crowds needs approval, so ask your supplier for their documents.
What should I send a photographer before a corporate event?
The run-of-show, a shot list with must-have people, brand guidelines, how the images will be used, delivery deadlines, consent arrangements and an on-site contact.
