Most shoppers decide in the aisle, not before they leave home. That is why a good in-store activation can move product within a day, and why a bad one just fills a corner with uniforms and balloons.

The short version

  • Pick one clear action for the shopper: taste it, try it, scan it or buy it with an offer.
  • Brief the store manager and check stock before the promoters arrive. An activation next to an empty shelf is money burned.
  • Train the promoters on one sentence about the product and one offer. Everything else is noise.
  • Measure sales at the outlet, not just how many people stopped.

Ten ideas that work

  1. Sample and sell. Offer a small taste or trial and make the next step easy: a bundle price at the stand, or the shelf two metres away. Sampling with no path to purchase is a giveaway.
  2. Cook-offs and live demos. For food and household products, show the product being used. A hostess preparing a quick recipe with the product draws a crowd that a stand on its own does not.
  3. Try before you buy. For electronics, personal care and health products, let people test it. A hands-on demo answers objections quicker than packaging.
  4. Bundle offers with a promoter. A buy-two deal sells better when someone explains it. Print the offer big and keep the maths simple.
  5. Games with instant prizes. A spin wheel or a scratch game gets people to stop. Keep the prizes small and relevant, and check whether your promotion needs regulatory approval before you advertise it.
  6. Sign-up with a reason. Capture a phone number for a loyalty offer or a coupon, and tell people how you will use it. Kenya’s Data Protection Act applies, so consent and a clear purpose are not optional.
  7. Shelf takeovers and clean displays. A well-stocked, well-lit display at eye level in a busy aisle outperforms a loud stand in a quiet corner.
  8. In-store audio and announcements. Where the store allows it, a short spoken offer at the right moments reaches shoppers who ignore signs.
  9. Family and kids’ corners. In malls, an activity for children keeps parents at your stand for longer. Check safety and supervision first.
  10. Institution tie-ins. Activations at schools, offices and estates reach a captive audience with a clear reason to engage. We have run these for family and consumer brands.

Mistakes that waste the budget

Stock is not on the shelf

The commonest and most expensive mistake. Confirm stock with the store a day before, and agree who restocks during the activation.

Promoters who are not briefed

A promoter who cannot say in ten seconds why someone should buy is a cost, not an asset. Run a short briefing on the morning with the offer, the answers to the three most common questions and what to do with complaints.

No agreement with the store

Supermarkets have rules about where you can stand, what you can play and what you can give out. Get written approval, including the hours, before you set up.

Too many messages

One product, one offer, one call to action. If the shopper has to read a paragraph, you have lost them.

Rule of thumb: if a promoter cannot explain the offer to a shopper walking past, the offer is too complicated.

What to measure

The most useful figure is sales of your product at that outlet during the activation compared with a normal day. Alongside it track the number of people who took part, samples given out, offers redeemed and sign-ups collected. Report by outlet so you can see which stores to repeat and which to drop. If you are choosing a partner for this, our guide on how to choose an experiential marketing agency covers what to ask.

Quick answers

How long should an in-store activation run?

One to three days per store is common, usually Friday to Sunday when traffic peaks. For new products, repeat over several weekends rather than one long burst.

How many promoters do I need per store?

Two for a standard stand: one to engage and one to serve or demonstrate. Add a supervisor if you are covering several stores in a day.

Do I need permission from the supermarket?

Yes. Agree the space, hours, sound level and any fees in writing before you commit.

What is the difference between in-store activation and a mall activation?

In-store activations happen next to the shelf where the purchase is made. Mall activations take place in common areas to build awareness and traffic, and often point shoppers to the shops inside.
