Team Building Venues Around Nairobi: How to Choose

The venue decides more of a team building day than the activities do. A great facilitator on a cramped lawn with no shade will lose to an average one on open, flat ground with somewhere to sit when it rains.

The short version

  • Pick the venue after you pick the format: a sports day, a problem-solving day and a retreat need different spaces.
  • Half a day close to the city usually beats a full day far away. The drive eats the energy you are paying to build.
  • Always have a covered space for the whole group, plus shade and water for the outdoor parts.
  • Ask the venue about the facilitator rules. Some insist you use their team.

Start with the format

Teams that ask us for “a team building” usually mean one of three different things, and each one needs a different place.

  • Active day. Relays, tug of war, obstacle courses, a sports day. You need flat open ground, shade, and room to run without hitting a fence. A hockey pitch or a school ground can beat a pretty garden.
  • Thinking day. Problem-solving challenges, treasure hunts, strategy games with a debrief. You need a main room and several breakout spaces, indoors or under cover, and quiet.
  • Retreat. A day or two away with meetings, an evening programme and often an overnight stay. You need accommodation, meeting rooms and a venue that can feed everyone without queues.

The mistake we see most often is booking a beautiful retreat centre for an active day and then discovering it has lovely paths and no flat open space for 80 people to play on.

How far is too far

Nairobi traffic changes the maths. A venue that is 40 kilometres away can mean a two-hour drive each way on a bad morning. For a one-day event, that is a quarter of the working day on a bus.

FormatGood travel time from the officeWhy
Half-day activity sessionUp to about 45 minutesPeople arrive fresh and are back for the afternoon.
Full-day team eventUp to about 90 minutesLeave early, finish by late afternoon, and beat the evening traffic home.
Overnight retreatTwo hours is fineThe journey becomes part of the trip.

These are rules of thumb from running events, not hard limits. If your team is mostly based in one part of the city, plan around where they live as much as where the office is.

Types of venue and what they suit

Conference and retreat centres on the edge of the city

Places in Limuru, Kiambu and the Ngong side offer accommodation, meeting rooms and green space in one site. Brackenhurst in Limuru is one name that comes up often for retreats. They suit overnight programmes and thinking days. They can be less suited to a high-energy sports day because the grounds are landscaped rather than open.

Sports clubs and school grounds

Underrated. A club or a school ground has flat pitches, changing rooms, toilets for large numbers and ample parking. Hiring one on a weekend is often straightforward and good value for an active day. Ask about availability around term time and any rules about outside caterers.

Gardens and restaurants

Good for a team lunch, a cooking challenge or a lighter afternoon. Not a fit for large active groups. See our notes on garden venues in Nairobi for the questions to ask.

Outdoor adventure and nature sites

Forest and hill locations suit hiking, orienteering and adventure formats. Check safety cover, first aid, guide-to-guest ratios and what happens in wet weather before you commit.

Safety is not optional. For anything physical, ask about first aid on site, insurance, and the facilitator’s briefing on safety. A good provider will answer without hesitation.

What to check on the site visit

  1. Stand where the group will stand. Can everyone hear one person without a microphone?
  2. Is there shade that holds the whole group, not a single tree?
  3. Where will teams wait between rounds? Waiting in the sun is where moods go.
  4. Is the toilet count realistic for your numbers?
  5. Can the facilitator’s equipment get to the activity area by vehicle?
  6. What is the wet-weather plan, and is that space big enough?

Take photos on the visit and share them with your facilitator. It is quicker than describing the layout.

Quick answers

How much time should we plan for a team building day?

For an active session, three to four hours of activity plus a meal works well. A full day needs a proper break in the middle and a debrief at the end, or people drift.

Should the venue provide the facilitator?

Not necessarily. Some venues have in-house teams, which can be fine for simple games. For a goal-driven day, an independent facilitator who works from your objective usually serves you better. Ask the venue whether outside providers are allowed.

What if half the team cannot do physical activities?

Design for it from the start. A good programme includes roles and challenges that work for every ability, rather than a separate “easy” group.

When should we book?

For the last quarter of the year, four to six weeks ahead for a day event and earlier for retreats. Weekends and the weeks before Christmas go first.
