A PR firm earns its fee in two moments: when you have something to say and need the right people to hear it, and when something has gone wrong and you need to say the right thing quickly. Everything else a good firm does is preparation for those two moments.

The short version

  • PR firms in Kenya handle media relations, launches, crisis communication, executive profiling, influencer work and reputation monitoring.
  • Typical 2026 retainers start from about KES 80,000 a month for a small, narrow scope and run into several hundred thousand for an active press office.
  • Judge a firm on the journalists it can genuinely reach, how it handles a crisis, and how it measures results. Not on a thick clippings book.
  • Ask for measurement that shows outcomes, not advertising value equivalents.

What does a PR firm do in Kenya?

A public relations firm manages how a company is seen by the media, customers, regulators, staff and investors. In practice the work in Kenya falls into six areas.

Media relations

Writing and pitching press releases, arranging interviews, briefing journalists, preparing spokespeople and handling media enquiries. The quality here comes from relationships with editors and reporters across print, broadcast and online, including vernacular radio, which still reaches audiences national TV does not.

Launches and announcements

Product launches, new market entries, results announcements and partnerships. A launch usually combines a press event, a release, interviews, social content and sometimes an experience for guests. This is where PR and events overlap, and where the logistics of a good corporate event decide whether journalists stay for the story.

Crisis communication

Product recalls, service outages, data breaches, staff incidents and social media storms. A good firm helps you prepare before anything happens: who speaks, who signs off, holding statements, and a contact list that works at 11pm on a Sunday.

Executive and corporate profiling

Thought-leadership articles, speaking slots at conferences, award entries and profile interviews for senior leaders.

Influencer and social work

Many PR firms now manage creator partnerships alongside media. Paid partnerships should be clearly disclosed, contracts should cover what the influencer can and cannot say, and any personal data collected through campaigns falls under the Data Protection Act 2019.

Monitoring and reporting

Tracking coverage and online conversation, flagging problems early, and reporting what changed.

How much does a PR firm cost in Kenya?

Most PR in Kenya is bought either as a monthly retainer or as a fixed project. Typical 2026 retainers start from about KES 80,000 a month for a narrow scope and rise into several hundred thousand shillings for an active press office or multi-market brand. These are general ranges we see, not fixed prices; get a written quote against your scope.

What you buyTypical range (2026)What it usually covers
Single press release packageFrom about KES 30,000Writing, approval rounds and pitching to a media list. Paid distribution or sponsored placement is extra.
Launch campaign (about a month)From about KES 100,000, plus event costsPlan, releases, media invitations, interviews, follow-up and a coverage report.
Crisis preparednessFrom about KES 120,000 as a projectRisk mapping, holding statements, spokesperson training and a response protocol.
Small-business retainerAbout KES 80,000 to 150,000 a monthA set number of releases or pitches, monitoring and a monthly report.
Mid-sized or active press office retainerAbout KES 200,000 to 600,000 a monthOngoing media relations, executive profiling, issues management and social support.
Large or multi-country brandsHigher, scoped individuallyRegional coordination, senior counsel and round-the-clock crisis cover.

What moves the price

  • How many announcements a month and how much senior time they need.
  • Whether crisis cover is included, and at what hours.
  • Events, travel for journalists, photography and video, which are usually billed separately.
  • Paid placements, advertorials and sponsored content, which are media costs and not PR fees.
  • 16% VAT on top of most invoices.

From experience: ask what happens to the retainer in a quiet month. A firm that has a plan for the quiet months, such as features, opinion pieces and executive interviews, is usually the one that delivers in the busy ones too.

How should PR be measured?

Measure PR by the outcomes it was meant to change, not by the number of clippings. The industry’s own guidance, the AMEC Barcelona Principles, moved away from advertising value equivalents (AVEs) years ago because they do not show whether anything changed.

LevelWhat to trackExample
OutputWhat was produced and placedReleases issued, interviews secured, articles published
Quality of coverageWhere and how you appearedTarget outlets, key message included, spokesperson quoted, tone
Audience responseWhat people didWebsite visits from coverage, search interest, enquiries, sign-ups
OutcomeWhat changed for the businessPerception shift in a survey, stakeholder support, sales or leads in the period

Agree the two or three measures that matter before the work starts, and ask for the report format at the proposal stage.

How do you choose a PR firm?

Choose on proven relationships in the media your audience reads or listens to, a clear crisis process, and the senior person who will actually be on your account. Run a short pitch with a real brief rather than a credentials meeting.

  1. Give a real scenario. “We launch in March, here is the product, here is our budget range.” Watch how they think, not just what they have done.
  2. Ask about the media they would target, by name of outlet type and audience. National dailies, business press, trade titles, vernacular radio, online news, podcasts. A firm that only talks about one channel is limited.
  3. Test the crisis answer. “It is Saturday night and a video of our product is trending for the wrong reasons. What happens in the next two hours?”
  4. Meet the account lead. The person at the pitch should be the person on the phone.
  5. Check references. Ask to speak to a current client, ideally one who has been through a difficult moment with them.
  6. Check professional standing. Membership of the Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) is a reasonable signal of commitment to the profession, though not a guarantee of quality.
  7. Read the contract. Scope, number of deliverables, notice period, who owns content and media lists, confidentiality.

When do you need PR, and when something else?

PR is the right tool when credibility matters more than reach: a story told by a journalist carries weight an advert cannot buy. When you need people to try a product or see it in person, PR works best alongside activations and events.

At Red Giant Media our part is usually the hands-on side: we are often the team that builds the launch event, the press experience or the activation that gives PR something to talk about. Quick answers

How much does a PR firm charge per month in Kenya?

Typical 2026 retainers start from about KES 80,000 a month for a small, narrow scope and run to several hundred thousand shillings for an active press office. Events, paid placements and VAT are usually extra, so get a written quote.

What is the difference between PR and advertising?

Advertising is paid space where you control the message. PR earns coverage through journalists, creators and events, so you do not control the final story but it usually carries more credibility.

Do PR firms in Kenya handle influencer marketing?

Many do. Make sure paid partnerships are disclosed, contracts set out what the influencer can say, and any personal data collected follows the Data Protection Act 2019.

How do I measure whether PR is working?

Agree outcome measures before the work starts, such as coverage in target outlets with key messages, website visits, enquiries or a perception survey. Avoid advertising value equivalents.

Should I hire a PR firm on retainer or per project?

Use a retainer if you have regular news, an active spokesperson or reputational risk. Use a project for a single launch or announcement, ideally with crisis preparation included.
