Naivasha is close enough to Nairobi for a weekend and far enough to feel like a proper escape. That is why so many weddings, company retreats and milestone parties end up by the lake. It also means you are planning a destination event, with travel, accommodation and weather to think about, not just a venue.

The short version

  • Treat it as a destination event. Guest travel and rooms matter as much as the venue.
  • Lakeside lodges, resorts and private gardens each suit different sizes and budgets.
  • Evenings get cold. Plan for warmth, cover and lighting after sunset.
  • Lake Naivasha has hippos. Keep guests away from the shoreline after dark.

Why Naivasha, and when it suits

The appeal is simple: open space, the lake, cooler air and a change of scene without a flight. It works best for events where people stay at least one night.

  • Weddings where the couple wants a garden or lakeside ceremony and a weekend with family and friends.
  • Company retreats that mix a strategy session or conference with team activities and a party.
  • Milestone celebrations such as anniversaries and big birthdays, where guests make a weekend of it.

It suits a day event less well. A long drive there and back in one day leaves little time for the event itself, and evening driving on the highway is something most organisers want to avoid.

Types of venue around the lake

There is a wide spread of places to stay and celebrate around Lake Naivasha. We are not ranking or listing them, because terms, capacity and prices change. These are the main types.

For company groups that want activities as well as a party, our guide to team-building venues around Nairobi includes notes on out-of-town options.

Getting guests there and back

Naivasha is reached by road on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. Traffic out of Nairobi on Friday afternoons and back on Sunday evenings can add a lot of time, so build that into the programme.

Transport

For company events, hired buses from the office are the safest and simplest option. For weddings, tell guests about realistic travel times in the invitation, and consider a shuttle from a central Nairobi point for guests without cars.

Accommodation

Block rooms early, especially for weekends and public holidays. Find out how long the venue will hold a block before releasing rooms, and give guests a clear booking deadline.

Suppliers

Some suppliers will be local and some will come from Nairobi. Ask who pays for their transport and accommodation, and when they arrive. A sound crew that leaves Nairobi on the morning of a Saturday wedding has very little margin.

Budgeting for a destination event

The venue quote is only part of the cost. Add guest and crew transport, crew accommodation and meals, extra set-up days, and any per-night charges if you need the event space the day before. Decide early who pays for guest rooms. For weddings it is often the guests; for company retreats it is the company, which changes the budget a great deal. Ask the venue for a single all-in quote per person per night so that options are easier to compare.

From experience: schedule the main event for the first evening or the middle day, never the last afternoon. Guests who are thinking about the drive home do not stay for the speeches.

Weather, wildlife and the outdoors

Cold evenings

Days around the lake can be warm, but evenings cool down quickly. For outdoor receptions, plan blankets or heaters, a tent with sides you can close, and warm drinks alongside the bar.

Rain

Kenya’s long rains run roughly March to May and the short rains roughly October to December. Any outdoor ceremony needs a covered fallback that fits all guests, agreed in writing.

Wildlife

Lake Naivasha is home to hippos, which come out of the water to graze at night. Follow the venue’s rules on where guests can walk after dark, light the paths, and do not plan anything at the water’s edge in the evening.

Light and sunset

Sunset here is close to Nairobi’s, around 6:30 to 6:45pm all year. If the photos matter, time the ceremony or the group photo for the late-afternoon light.

Questions to ask a Naivasha venue

  1. How many rooms can you hold for us, and until when?
  2. Will other groups or weddings be on site the same day?
  3. Where is the covered option if it rains, and does it fit everyone?
  4. What are the rules on music, finishing time and fireworks?
  5. Can we bring our own caterer, decorator and sound company?
  6. What are your safety rules around the lake and wildlife after dark?
  7. Do you hold a music licence, or do we arrange it with MCSK, KAMP and PRISK?
  8. What are the deposit, payment and cancellation terms?

Quick answers

Is Naivasha good for a day event from Nairobi?

It can work, but it is tight. The drive there and back takes a large part of the day, so most events in Naivasha work better with at least one night.

When is the best time of year for an outdoor event in Naivasha?

Outside the main rainy seasons is safest: roughly June to September and January to February. Always have a covered fallback anyway.

Is it safe to hold an event near the lake?

Yes, if you follow the venue’s rules. Hippos graze near the shore at night, so keep evening activities away from the water and light the paths.

How early should we book a Naivasha venue?

For weddings and large retreats, several months ahead, especially for weekends and holidays when rooms sell out.
