The end-of-year gift is the one thing from the party that goes home with every employee. Done well, it says the company noticed. Done badly, it ends up in a drawer with three other logo mugs. The difference is rarely the budget. It is how much thought went into who is receiving it.
- Fix a budget per head first, then choose the gift. Not the other way round.
- Useful beats branded. Keep the logo small or put it on the packaging.
- Branded and imported items need weeks of lead time. Order by early November for December delivery.
- A short personal note from a manager often matters more than the gift itself.
Start with the budget and the people
Decide on a single amount per head that the whole company can live with, then decide whether everyone gets the same gift or whether there is a choice. Different gifts for different grades is a fast way to create resentment. If you want to reward top performers, do it separately through awards on the night.
Then think about who your people are. A head office team in Nairobi, field sales staff spread across counties, and factory shift workers will value different things. Ask a handful of people from each group what they would like. It takes an afternoon and saves you a costly guess.
One more question for finance: how staff gifts are treated for tax and accounting purposes. The answer can affect whether cash, vouchers or physical gifts make most sense, so check with your finance team or tax adviser before you commit.
Gift ideas that people actually use
Food and drink hampers
A hamper of good Kenyan products travels well and is shared at home over the holidays: tea, coffee, honey, jams, nuts, biscuits. Build it around local suppliers and it doubles as a quiet story about the company’s values. Ask about dietary and religious needs before adding alcohol.
Practical everyday items
A quality insulated bottle, a solid backpack, a power bank, wireless earphones, a good umbrella for the rainy season. Pick fewer items of better quality rather than a bag of small branded things.
Something for the family
The Kenyan school year starts in January, and December is when families feel that cost. School supply vouchers or a back-to-school pack for employees’ children is a gift people talk about for a long time. Make it fair for staff without children by offering an alternative.
Experiences
Vouchers for a dinner for two, a spa session, a family day out, or a night away. They work best in Nairobi and other major towns where there are enough options to make the voucher usable.
Wellbeing
Gym or fitness class passes, a quality yoga mat, or a sleep kit. Popular with younger teams, less so with people who would never use them. Offer a choice.
Learning
Books, an online course allowance, or a subscription. This sends a clear message about growth, but should feel like a gift, not homework.
Choice and flexibility
Supermarket vouchers, a gift card, or a cash token sent by M-Pesa. Least personal, but most useful for staff on lower salaries. You can make it feel more considered by pairing it with a handwritten card.
Recognition pieces
Engraved items, framed certificates or trophies for long service and specific achievements. These belong to the awards part of the evening rather than the general gift. Our guide to planning an award ceremony covers how to run that segment.
Comparing the options
| Gift type | Works well for | Lead time | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hampers | Mixed teams, families | 2 to 4 weeks | Perishables, dietary needs, alcohol |
| Branded practical items | Office and field staff | 3 to 6 weeks | Low quality, oversized logos |
| Back-to-school packs | Staff with children | 3 to 4 weeks | Fairness for staff without children |
| Experience vouchers | Urban teams | 1 to 2 weeks | Limited options outside major towns, expiry dates |
| Cash or M-Pesa token | Lower-paid staff, dispersed teams | Days | Feels impersonal without a note; check treatment with finance |
| Recognition pieces | Awards and long service | 2 to 4 weeks | Spelling of names on engraving |
From experience: order five percent more than your headcount. Someone always joins late, a box gets damaged, or a name was missed off the list.
Branding, timing and delivery
Branding
If you want branding, keep it subtle: a small embroidered logo, a branded box or sleeve, or a card. People use a good item with a discreet logo for years. They give away a loud one.
Timing
December is the busiest month for printers, engravers and hamper suppliers. Confirm samples in October, place orders by early November, and plan for delivery at least a week before the party. Imported items need even longer.
Handing them out
Decide when gifts are given. Handing them out at the party works if there is a clear moment and a team at a gift desk with a printed list. Leaving them on tables invites confusion. For staff who cannot attend, arrange courier delivery to branches or homes, and keep a record of who has received what.
The note
A short card signed by the person’s manager, with one specific line about their year, turns any gift into something personal. Start collecting those lines in November.

Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing the gift because a supplier had stock, not because it suits your people.
- Giving different gifts by grade without explanation.
- Alcohol as the only option.
- Ordering in late November and accepting whatever is left.
- Forgetting staff on leave, on night shift or at remote sites.
- No list. Without one, you will not know who missed out until they tell you.

Quick answers
Should every employee get the same end-of-year gift?
Usually yes. A single gift, or a choice from the same list, avoids resentment. Reward exceptional performance separately through awards or bonuses.
When should we order corporate gifts for December?
Agree the gift and see samples in October, and place orders by early November. Branded and imported items need the longest lead time.
Is cash a good end-of-year gift?
It is the most useful for many staff, especially on lower salaries, but it can feel impersonal. Pair it with a handwritten note, and check with finance how it should be processed.
How do we get gifts to staff who are not at the party?
Keep a list of everyone eligible, mark who collects on the night, and arrange courier delivery to branches or homes for the rest within the following week.
