Roundabout Activations in Nairobi: A Practical Guide

Nairobi’s traffic is a problem for everyone except brands with something to say. At a busy roundabout during rush hour, thousands of drivers and passengers sit still for several minutes, looking out of the window. A roundabout activation uses that moment. It can be very effective. It can also be dangerous and short-lived if it is not planned properly.

The short version

  • A roundabout activation reaches commuters in slow traffic with branding, performers and hand-outs.
  • Safety comes first. Staff work near moving vehicles, so positions, training and supervision matter more than the creative.
  • Approvals usually involve the county government and traffic police. Do not skip them.
  • Give people one simple action they can take later: a code, a USSD string, a WhatsApp number.

What a roundabout activation is

A roundabout activation is a short, high-visibility brand presence at a busy roundabout or junction. Typically it combines branded displays or costumes, a team of brand ambassadors, and sometimes performers, all positioned to be seen by vehicles that are slowing down or queuing.

The audience is unusual. It is large, repeated (the same commuters pass every day), and mostly in private cars, matatus and buses. People cannot stop, and they cannot easily take something away unless traffic is at a standstill. That shapes everything about what works.

Roundabout activations suit launches, price announcements, new services with a simple call to action (dial a code, download an app, visit a branch), and short bursts of awareness ahead of a bigger campaign.

Formats and when to use them

FormatWhat it looks likeUse it when
Static branded presenceAmbassadors in branded outfits holding boards or flags on the island or pavementYou need repeated visibility on a commuter route over several days
PerformanceDancers, stilt walkers, mascots or a short choreographed routineYou want people to look, film and share
Hand-outs at standstillFlyers or small samples passed to vehicles in stationary queuesTraffic is reliably stopped and the item is small and useful
Combined with a nearby siteRoundabout presence directing people to a stand at a petrol station, mall or branch nearbyYou want the activation to lead to an actual visit or sign-up

The strongest roundabout activations are simple. One colour, one message, one action, repeated. Drivers have a few seconds. A long tagline or a crowded board will not be read.

From experience: design every board and costume to be read from a moving car at a distance. If the message cannot be read at walking pace from across the road, it will not be read from a matatu.

Approvals and timing

Who to check with

Roundabouts and road reserves are public spaces, so you will usually need permission. In Nairobi that generally means the county government for the use of the space and any temporary branding, and the traffic police for anything that could affect the flow of vehicles. Roads are managed by different authorities depending on the road, so ask the county which other bodies need to be informed for your location. Outside Nairobi, check with each county.

Do not treat approvals as optional. A team without permission can be moved on within minutes, and the brand can end up in the news for the wrong reasons.

When to activate

  • Morning peak. Roughly 6:30am to 9am on main commuter routes into the city.
  • Evening peak. Roughly 4:30pm to 7:30pm out of the city. Remember that it gets dark around 6:30 to 6:45pm in Nairobi all year, which affects both visibility and safety.
  • Days of the week. Mid-week tends to be steadier than Monday or Friday, which can be unpredictable.
  • Season. Rain in the long rains (roughly March to May) and short rains (roughly October to December) cuts visibility and makes conditions slippery. Have a rain plan.

Choose the roundabout for its audience. A junction near business parks and offices reaches different people from one on a route into a residential estate or near a university.

Keeping people safe

This is the part that separates a professional roundabout activation from a reckless one. Your team will be close to moving traffic for hours.

  1. Positions. Staff stand on islands, pavements and safe verges. Nobody walks between moving lanes. Hand-outs happen only when traffic is fully stopped, and only where it is safe to step back.
  2. Visibility. Bright, branded outfits with reflective elements, especially near dusk.
  3. Supervision. A supervisor at every site with authority to pause the activation if traffic or weather changes.
  4. Shifts and breaks. Short shifts, shade, water and a toilet arrangement nearby. Exhaust fumes and sun are tiring.
  5. Briefing. Every team member knows how to respond to a frustrated driver, a traffic officer, or a member of the public who asks questions.
  6. Insurance. Confirm cover for staff and third parties before the first day.

Performers need extra thought. Stilts, mascots and costumes reduce mobility and vision, so keep them well back from the road edge.

Making it measurable

Roundabout activations are hard to measure directly, because people cannot respond on the spot. Build in a way to respond later:

  • A short code, USSD string or keyword that is only used for this activation.
  • A WhatsApp number or QR code on flyers handed out at standstill.
  • A dedicated offer at a nearby branch, petrol station or store.
  • Social media mentions and video shares, which performances tend to generate.

Count what you can each day: hours on site, flyers or samples given, and responses through the codes. Compare with days before the activation.

Roundabouts are one format among many. For the bigger picture, see experiential marketing services explained and our guide to guerrilla marketing in Kenya. If you want reach beyond Nairobi, look at roadshows.

Quick answers

Do I need permission for a roundabout activation in Nairobi?

Usually yes. Check with the county government for use of the space and branding, and inform the traffic police. Other road authorities may need to be informed depending on the road.

What time of day works best?

Morning and evening peaks on major commuter routes, when traffic is slow. Plan for dusk at around 6:30 to 6:45pm, which affects both visibility and safety.

Can staff hand out flyers to cars?

Only when traffic is completely stopped and staff can step back safely. Nobody should walk between moving lanes, and a supervisor should be able to pause hand-outs at any time.

How do you measure a roundabout activation?

Give people a way to respond later, such as a unique code, USSD string, WhatsApp number or nearby offer, and track those responses alongside daily activity counts.
